1996 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The 1996 NCAA Men's Division I Ice Hockey Tournament involved 12 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college ice hockey. It began on March 22, 1996, and ended with the championship game on March 30. A total of 11 games were played. The top 2 seeds in each region received a bye into the tournament quarterfinals.
The University of Michigan, coached by Red Berenson, won the national championship with a 3-2 victory over Colorado College in overtime in front of 12,957 fans.

- The famous lacrosse-style goal by Michigan's Mike Legg was scored in the West Regional game against Minnesota.
- The game winning goal scored by Colorado College during their semi-final match against Vermont was thrown in by hand but was still ruled as a goal.
- The Colorado College player's momentum carrying him forward, he open-palmed the puck, which was directed in to the goal.
- The 1996 UVM Hockey team included Martin St. Louis, former NHL MVP and Stanley Cup winner with the Tampa Bay Lightning, as well as Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins, winner of the 2009 Vezina trophy.
